What is this play about on the surface?
What deeper themes are underneath? In other words, what important ideas are insights are conveyed? Why did Friel choose to convey them in this setting, do you think?
Is this play relevant to current events? How? Explain.
The play on the surface level is simply a story about the family surrounding the hedge school, and their relations with the British engineers and each other. Although in a deeper sense it expresses the sort of destruction of the Irish culture and way of life by the British, even through simple things not seemed important at first like renaming a few things. It really plays well with many cultures that were conquered and can still be seen today (diminishing cultures).
ReplyDeleteOn the surface this play seems to be about a dysfunctional group of people who are visited by a Brit and his team of surveyors, and everyone is affected differently.
ReplyDeleteDeeper down the story tells a lot about the way that people think. Some of the people in the story have aspirations for greater things and some are happy with living in their small town.
In current times there are a lot of people whose families have surmounted to having enough money to be able to do these greater things, such as move to better places or get higher education. A lot of young people want to escape from their small towns while the older generations are content with where they are and are happy
On the surface, the play is about a town in Ireland who is having to deal with the British rule.
ReplyDeleteOn a deeper note, I think its about having to deal with change and deciding whether or not to hold on to the past. I think Friel choose to convey it this way because it's a topic that everyone knows and in its entirety, conveys the message.
I don't think its really current but the first thing that comes to mind is the soon to be Americans coming in and taking over the Native Americans.
On the surface, this is about a group of hedge school attendees and teachers reacting to the British anglicizing Ireland. On a deeper level, this play displays how changing times lead to people taking sides and making sacrifices of their friends or comfort in order to benefit themselves or those surrounding them. I think Friel chose this setting to convey this theme because the people are relatable in that they are commonfolk and are friends, so the audience can see how change can affect things that were not originally meant to be influenced. This play is relevant to current events because there is always big and small change going on in the world and everyone is affected by it in one way or another.
ReplyDeleteThe play is about the British soldiers coming into Ireland and you see how it affects this group of people. They are all very normal so you can relate more to who they are and how they act. I think Friel chose to convey them in the school setting because it shows how they live their everyday life and then how this transition as the British come in and start translating all the Gaelic names to English. As you read deeper you see the relationships between everybody as Maire starts to fall for Yolland while with Manus, and how Yolland desires to stay in Ireland even though you cannot speak the language. I think the play is relevant to current events because it shows this drastic change in their life that they may not agree with or want. It kind of relates to Donald Trump getting elected as president because even for the people that support him, it is a large change. It brings up how everyday normal people have to adapt to these changes while there are other problems and big issues going on in their lives.
ReplyDeleteWhat this play is about on the surface is British soldiers invading and renaming streets and places of Ireland. One deep meaning that I got from this book is the importance of communication. In the book, we see how many of the characters struggle to accept that they have to move from their language, which is Gaelic, and learn how to speak English. Many characters fail to except this reality and because of this, many people are not able to communicate properly. Why I think that Friel choose to convey this theme in this setting is because many times, we feel like people are trying to erase an existing culture or trend when in reality, these changes are needed in order to progress. I think that this play is relevant to current events and forever will be because there will always be change and we just have to adapt to those changes.
ReplyDeleteThis play is about the British 'incursion' and renaming of every place in Ireland.
ReplyDeleteDeeper, the play is about the idea of how words are a reference to ideas, and the true meaning that is conveyed through them. While translating, Owen makes a realization about the history buried in each name of certain places, which will be lost when translated into English. Also, how Jimmy reminds everybody that you must keep reminding yourself of information or risk fossilization. This is emphasized when he has trouble reciting a passage at the end of the book, and can't remember what it meant.
This play is still relevant today because in the information age, cultures are easily mixed up and moving from country to country is many times easier than it was 150 years ago. This play explores the conflict and loss of history that comes with immigration, translation, and how cultures influence other cultures when they come into contact with each other.
On the surface, this play is about many things. The conflict of converting all the Gaelic to English, the new found love between Maire and Yolland, Manus finding out about the two of them and leaving. But under the surface, it is mainly about adapting. One of the major events that happens in this play is when Lancey, Yolland, and Owen come to change literally every name from Gaelic to English and they do it without the consent of the Irish people. In order for this to work out, the Irish people need to adapt to their changing surroundings.
ReplyDeleteThe play is about the English trying to take over the Irish. Ireland starts changing and the people don't really know what to do about it, should they just follow along? It's about the Irish trying to deal with British rule and how the rule affects the people in the hedge-school. There are different languages in the play to show how even today people speak different languages but that doesn't mean we should compete. There is always change and people get affected, but that doesn't mean those people should stop dreaming.
ReplyDeleteThe play Translations is about the British coming to Ireland and colonizing it. The people of Baile Bag are not fond of this and eventually a large portion of character leave.
ReplyDeleteThe play on the surface shows a school with an odd group of people trying to make sense of why the British surveyors are there. In a deeper meaning, this is showing how much disruption is caused when one culture forces itself on to another. He showed them in this setting to force the Irish to adapt to change in the small town. This could relate to current events with countries trying to force themselves into another, and attempting to spread their culture and language.
ReplyDelete1. Conflicts caused by foreign royal engineers in a small town in Ireland.
ReplyDelete2. It talks about how imperialism is often made to look like a helping hand from a more powerful nation but it results in loss of cultural heritage and harms the nation being occupied for the benefit of the occupier. On a political scale the damage of imperialism is hard to see but when we get in the lives of obscure townspeople we see its dramatic impact on individual lives.
3. I suppose it is relevant to how first world countries should treat developing countries, a question we still don't have an answer to.
On the surface, the play is essentially about the struggles of the students attending the hedge school, and how the British are currently colonizing Ireland. A more underlying theme is how they all have their own personal pursuits, and the issues that are caused by success or lack there of. Friel wants to convey the theme of the importance of tradition, and holding on to the past, even if others are in the way. Furthermore, he wants to show that you can still account for your interests even if things are changing around you. This can be compared to current events because there is always change around us, and we still need to stay true to ourselves and not let others get in the way of that.
ReplyDeleteWhat is this play about on the surface?
ReplyDelete- This story is focused about the real life conversation that we often say it in reality so overlapping and awkward pauses are exist inside of the conversation. Because of those dramatic sources that exist inside of the conversation, it makes more smooth.
What deeper themes are underneath? In other words, what important ideas are insights are conveyed? Why did Friel choose to convey them in this setting, do you think?
-
Is this play relevant to current events? How? Explain.
- Well I think this play is not relevant to modern conversation because of the technology development, people get into their social media often more than talking to their friends and family. It's good play to show to the audiences that making a conversation is important.
The surface meaning of the play is about Manus getting hurt because Maire fell in love with a British solider. The deeper meaning is the struggle that Irish are experiencing because the British are colonizing Ireland and forcing them o change
ReplyDeleteOn the surface, this play is about disagreements between people of transitioning from the language of Irish to English. But, beneath this obvious explanation, there are much deeper meanings of Translations by Friel. The play also portrays how a problem that seems like a minor annoyance at first may slowly unfold to become a major issue. For example, at the beginning of the play people were just annoyed with the fact that the name of Irish cities and roads were being changed to English. But later, further problems occur where future students were to be taught English, and language barriers start to form. At the end, the play escalates quickly and becomes a manhunt. I think Friel tried to make life seem good at the beginning by portraying happiness. It is relevant to current events as any situation can start off small and become major.
ReplyDeleteThis play surfaces on real events that have happen to Ireland between England trying to take control of the Irish.Friel chose to convey in this setting because it was a time that Ireland was changing and becoming like England. I believe there's no current events that are relevant to this.
ReplyDeleteOn the surface Translations is a play about the hardships faced by members of a hedge school through British occupation. The deeper theme of Translations has to do with the language barrier and how it effects people and separates them from connecting with each other. In the story Yolland and Marie had love at first sight but becuase of their differences culturally, Yolland being British and Marie being Irish, they sadly could never be together. This play is relevant to current events becuase of the troubles we face in America with immigration becuase of the clash of cultures.
ReplyDeleteOn the surface, this play is about the members of a Hedge School, and the hardships they face from the British occupation of Ireland.
ReplyDeleteOn a deeper level, it portrays the difficulties when cultures clash, and is displayed by Yolland, and the love between him and Maire. It shows the idea that jealousy will lead to a bad outcome, and also that no matter how hard you try to adapt to a new culture, there will always be some separation. I think that Friel chooses to convey these ideas in the setting of an Irish hedge school because it is a more relatable setting that uses close friendships to convey its messages.
This play is relevent to current events because now with the issue in America with immigration and a clash of cultures, it is important to understand the hardships that people face. This play exemplifies that no matter how hard a person tries to adapt, it may not ever be possible and that is an issue with Trump and the current issues relating laws about immigration.
This play is mainly about how soldiers from America are renaming the streets and places of Irish folklore into more American names so that other minorities could understand their language better. One main theme that I found throughout the story is that change is not always bad thing so in a way it's good to try new things so that you have an experience of what it's like. Friel chose to convey the acts in this type of setting since he is trying to show how trying new things is a good thing based on the acts which are different examples. There's really nothing that seems to be similar to this accept maybe the changes that Donald Trump has done to the U.S.
