1. Why do some cultures feel superior to others?
2. When does one culture have a right to intervene in another's affairs?
3. When does one culture not have a right to intervene?
LEAVE YOUR ANSWER IN A COMMENT BELOW.
1. Cultures feel superior to others based on their own observations and beliefs. The Nazi's felt they were superior to the Jews because of their skin tone and hair color, and eyes. Many cultures believe they are superior due to their physique or religious beliefs.
ReplyDelete2. I don't think that any culture really has a right to intervene in another groups. A country should only intervene if it involves their allies. If an allied country is having a war with another country, we should go and help the allies. If two allied countries are fighting each other, we should stay away and do nothing.
3. There is never a time where it is appropriate for a country to take over another's and try to change everyone that is there into their ways. It is alright for people who are taking over new land to try to push their ideals onto people, as they now rule them, however it is not alright for a country to force everyone to act the way they want them to and kill them if they do not.
I agree. If an allied country is being harmed, then we should intervene and that if two allied countries are fighting then we should leave them be.
Delete1. Cultures feel more superior to each other because of the way kids are raised. In America, since elementary school, we were brought up in a highly patriotic and nationalist society. We here propaganda all the time and other countries are made out to be less than us. We don't learn world history until late into middle school.
ReplyDelete2. I think that a country has a right to intervene in another's affairs when the country is a direct threat to another country or that country's allies. If a country might attack or is hurt another country, then the country has a right to defend it's self. Keyword defend, not attack.
3. We should not interfere if we believe its against our morals. We don't have a right to judge other countries beliefs. If every country did that then the whole world would be at war. We just have to be accepting of everyone.
I agree with what you said in 2 & 3, it make sense because when someone breaks the rule you also have the right to break the rule to stop them from breaking the rule.
Delete1. Some cultures feel superior to others, I think, because of a lack of diversity, and also disparities in core beliefs. When there are major differences between cultures, it can cause them to feel alienated and can lead to a feeling of ethnocentrism. I also believe that pride for one's culture can cause people to feel superior over other cultures as an act of loyalty towards their nation/culture.
ReplyDelete2.I believe that one culture has the right to intervene in another's affairs only if the rights of human beings are being violated. I believe that if the basic rights of life or liberty are being violated then it is the right of other cultures to step in and protect human lives. I think that cultures should also be able to intervene in times of war or hardship, and is only allowed to do things to promote the well being of the members of the other cultures.
3. I think one culture does not have the right to intervene in the cultural practices of another culture if it does not harm any humans. I think that one culture has the right to do whatever customs they believe in, and it cannot elicit a intervention as long as the basic rights of humans are not harmed. Although the "basic rights" of humans may be blurry to some cultures, it makes sense not to involuntarily harm or end a human life as part of a ritual or culture. Cultures should be able to live their lives in freedom, and without the fear of other cultures disturbing their customs and beliefs. I also believe that one culture has the right to intervene if the other culture is living on the land of the first culture, because the rules of the land should be dictated by who owns it.
1. I think some cultures feel superior to others because I feel like human beings as a species always are competing for the superior spot. There will always be competition, and it shows up everywhere like school, the workplace, sports, etc. The need for superiority comes from humans just being humans.
ReplyDelete2. I think that a one culture only has the right to intervene if asked by another culture. One culture should not barge in and believe that it is their job to save the day, when they do not have permission from the other culture.
3. Anytime they are not given permission from another culture, they should not intervene. What if another culture appears to be in trouble, but they don't want our help. Chances are another culture will intervene in and save they day, but that shouldn't happen.
I agree with your idea that ethnocentrism stems from competition and I think your point that a culture should not intervene unless asked, but should a culture still not intervene if innocent lives are being harmed?
Delete1. Some cultures in our society do feel superior over others. I believe it feels this way more because of the amount of people in that culture. Also the people that are around you when you are growing up really shape what you see as a norm which usually then translates over to superiority. For example people in the US probably believe American culture is superior while someone from France who comes and visits the US feels French culture is superior just because that is usually who surrounds them in their environment.
ReplyDelete2. I do not think it is ever okay for one culture to intervene in another's affairs. Everyone has the right to be apart of whatever culture or group they want and no other cultures have the right to mess with that. The only time I believe it would be okay to intervene is if innocent people are getting hurt.
3. One culture does not have the right to intervene with another especially if you are from one culture and visiting or surrounding yourself with another culture, you must respect their beliefs and traditions. Every person is different and every group of people are different. But these differences are what make our world more unique. Without different cultures people would never learn how to empathize and understand people unlike them. I feel lucky to live in California which is a place dense with many different cultures and types of people and it has definitely helped me learn more about others and the world.
When you say that some cultures feel superior to others based on the amount of people in that culture, are you saying that people have comfort in being part of something large? If so, does that mean a person for a small village with a unique cultural identity would feel less secure about their culture than someone from a huge city or country with a common overarching culture?
Delete1.) I think that some cultures believe that they already know so much about themselves and the history that the certain culture has gone through, they are kinda in their own bubble of unawareness of others.
ReplyDelete2.) I believe that if another person who is disrespecting the others cultures or in a way that is offensive and cruel. Possibly if they are mocking the person for what he believes in.
3.) I think that if one person from another culture is expressing their beliefs in a way that it is not offensive and is peaceful, then there should be no reason to disrupt the person if they are praying or doing other traditional beliefs.
1. Some cultures feel superior to others because they think their culture is the best one. It's in their head and everyone in that culture has been believing it since the beginning. Some of them have been raised to think they are superior. One culture thinks the other cultures are inferior because they don't really know much about them and think their culture is the best.
ReplyDelete2. One culture has a right to intervene in other's affairs when it's about them or if the two cultures are close. If they have lived together or fought together against others I think they have the right to intervene in their affairs.
3. One culture doesn't have a right to intervene when the culture doesn't have anything to do with the other culture. It's none of their business and they shouldn't come between the cultures that are having affairs. They should just leave it up to that culture to solve it.
1. Some cultures feel superior to others because the standards that the members of that culture are taught are different. When people have different standards, what they believe is good and bad, or right and wrong, is different. This results in people of different cultures viewing the practices of others as bad, or morally subordinate to their standards.
ReplyDelete2. One culture has the right to intervene in another's affairs when the affairs jeopardize mass numbers of human life. In the past, there have been so many times where millions of people are murdered because other cultures and countries did not want to intervene. If a culture has the capability to protect innocent lives, they should do it. Human life is something that should be respected by everyone, and the threat of mass murder should justify intercultural intervention.
3. A culture does not have the right to intervene when the action of intervening would cause more harm than good and could further jeopardize human rights. For example, there is a practice in a Nigerian village of exposing newborn twins to kill them in order to protect the rest of the village. This may seem barbaric to those of other cultures, but the beliefs of that culture make the people afraid to let the twins live as they are seen as evil. In this case, if another culture were to intervene, the Nigerian village may be so scared of stopping the practice that they would fight against the intervening culture, leading to more death and destruction than there was before. The intervening culture would have therefore done more harm than good.
1-2-3 You are completely right! If people have power to protect others then they should use it, especially if on that fight/war are family members related hiding-waiting to be rescued.
Delete1. some cultures feel superior to others because of religion and honor to their people. Religion makes people believe in their God, Goddesses and learn lessons to pride their kind and honor their families. Passing them down after generations, men and women raising their kids to love their culture and show pride to being born with their culture.
ReplyDelete2. a culture should only have a right to intervene with another's when a family has a connection to theirs because cultures are always about families, love, honor, and pride. If they are in danger, it would be right to save that family person.
3. culture has no right to intervene when there are fights and disagreements between religions. Each one is different and cultures tend to spread their religions and styles, but they should not force or teach another culture's religion their religion.
I think it is interesting that you perceive that differences between cultures stem from personal pride.
DeleteI agree! But I don't think cultures ONLY should have a right to intervene with another's when a family has a connection. Sometimes it can be something else, but I certainly think that they can intervene when a family member is in danger. I agree that each culture is different and that they tend to spread their religions and styles but shouldn't force to other cultures.
Delete1. because they feel that their race have achieved more culturally and use that as evidence that their race was born more capable. Because they're more familiar with their own ethnic group, their ideas of other ethnic groups are generalized and that's often a negative thing. Also simply because of human nature, people like people who are similar to them more, and tribalism.
ReplyDelete2. Legally speaking, above the country level there are no laws, only agreements at best. And every country has every "right" to impose whatever law they want on their citizens. However if one culture feels another culture is damaging the individuals of the human race which they're also a part of, I think morally they have the right the intervene.
3. the answer to this question is essentially the opposite of what I wrote above, so I'll just elaborate on my point further. If we're talking about a culture as an organizations, where every member is in agreement with the majority of that group or whoever is in power in that group (which I don't think is true), then we can treat cultures like individual when talking about the morals of interventions. And I believe the general consensus on that is you have the right to do whatever you want unless it effects someone else, in which case you need to approval of the other party to proceed.
1. I think that some cultures feel superior than other cultures because the traditions and beliefs they have been practicing for decades or centuries becomes engraved in their mind, thinking that they are the right ones because they think they have been right the whole time they have been practicing. I also think stereotypes come into play. Once a stereotype has been spread, the member of that certain culture will start to believe the rumor by hearing it multiple times via joke or discussion, making them have a fixed opinion on the other culture.
ReplyDelete2. I think a culture has a right to intervene in another culture's affairs if they will try to stop a threat that is aimed towards another culture.
1. I think that some cultures feel more superior than others because, in some cases, one culture is more recognizable than others. Because one culture may be known around the around by many people, that gives the people of that culture the feeling that they are more superior. Another factor which could make one culture seem more superior than another is its impact on pop culture.
ReplyDelete2. A culture has the right to intervene in another cultures affairs when one culture is intentionally hurting the people who take part of that culture. No matter what culture an individual is part of, humans should all be treated respectfully, and be provided a safe environment to live in. No matter what culture you are apart of, I think that universally, everyone believes that people should be treated in a good way.
3. A culture does not have the right to intervene in another cultures affairs when nothing severely bad is occurring. There may be certain things that one culture does that dose not seem normal to another culture. Just because one culture does things that might not seem normal compared to another cultures standards does not mean it is bad or that it has to be stopped. As long as the lives of innocent people are not being put in jeopardy, a culture does not need to intervene and stop that cultures activity.
1. They feel their values are more rich and civilized and hence have the right to feel superior. That they are morally stronger in culture.
ReplyDelete2. When the others is doing really dumb stuff like killing whole other groups and just being downright savages. Sort of things like racial cleansing or killing babies is the sort of things other cultures should be reeducated about.
3. I don't think others should intervene when its just minor stuff that does not really affect anyone else. Like people shouldn't just police other's cultures because they feel its odd (as long as they are not violating many human rights and stuff etc).
Do you think that country A should go invade country B because they are doing things country A doesn't believe in, even if the laws allow country B to do whatever but not in A?
Delete1. I believe that some cultures feel superior to other cultures becuase they find other cultures more extreme or strange compared to their customs. Some traditions practiced in particular cultures date back hundreds of years and today may seem very strange and out dated to others. I also think that by thinking another culture is worse it makes people feel better about their own culture and even about themselves as individuals.
ReplyDelete2. I don't think that any culture has a particular right to intervene in another's affairs unless it is an extreme situation. Countries should step in if the situation is similar to the holocaust and millions of lives are at stake. Unfortunately nobody stepped in and millions of people died.
3. A culture doesn't have a right to intervene in another's affairs if the situation isn't dangerous. If a culture is hurting others who don't want to be in that culture then it is a problem. If a cultures traditions are considered out dated today but a member of that culture accepts that as their way of life others shouldn't have the right to intervene.
Some cultures can feel superior because of their primary goals their culture is attuned to achieve. For instance, the culture surrounding the Renaissance is widely viewed as being a flourishing center for art and science. People who enjoy and can relate to these types of things will prefer this culture to a, for instance, a warlike culture constantly fighting. Certain people may feel like this mentality in a culture will make it subpar to other virtues that they themselves value.
ReplyDeleteThere is a grey area for the intervention of other countries affairs. As a general rule, I think that violence or unnecessary cruelty against innocent people is generally where the boundary ends. Killing people needlessly is just cruel and inhumane treatment of fellow peoples, and should be stopped.
A culture should not intervene with another if their intervention will harm or damage other humans. Once the intervention is doing more harm than good, or it's for a minor thing that doesn't damage or hurt people, it's unnecessary.
1. Some cultures feel superior to others because they believe that their beliefs override other societies and lifestyles. They might also have a lot of cultural pride and spirit which causes them to have this feeling of greatness. Also, there may be some heavy disagreement towards customs and ways of life, which creates the "superiority".
ReplyDelete2. It is difficult to pin point a specific point in which it is "okay'' for one culture to intervene in another's affairs because that is their chosen society and created system. If the circumstances are very drastic and not everyone in the society is in agreement with the standards, then there is some right to intervene.
3. A culture does not have a right to intervene when the culture they are targeting is all in agreement with the norms, and there are no problems from within. If another culture is to intervene, because they themselves disagree with a policy, then that would not be just. Only if there is a true demand for help, another culture should intervene, otherwise, there should be no intervention.
1. Some cultures feel superior to others for a variety of reasons. One reason may be related to the number of people who practice their ways. The more people who follow their culture, the more influence they would have on others. Therefore, cultures with a larger following may feel superior to those with a smaller following, as they have more influence on the world's population. More people would likely follow the ways of a larger culture than a smaller one, so they would feel that they have more power over the other. Another reason why a culture may feel superior to another is the country where the culture is most practiced. If a culture is generally practiced in a highly developed area, they would likely feel that they are stronger than a culture that is practiced in a small village. A culture in a more developed area would have more access to necessary supplies for battle, have more money to spread influence, and attract more people to join them as more developed areas are always appealing to others.
ReplyDelete2. A culture would only have the right to interfere with another's affairs if it is likely to cause danger to themselves or an ally. Otherwise, being involved in other people's problems would only cause a riot and further complicate the situation. Cultures should be able to practice what they think is right as long as it doesn't cause harm to other cultures. Just because one culture thinks a practice may be immoral doesn't mean that another culture thinks the same way. If we are going to praise freedom of expression for our own people, we should do the same for others. A dominant culture's opinions are the most accepted, but not always the most correct opinions. So, to intervene with something unrelated to a certain culture would only be to violate their own or someone else's morals. Cultures have the right to settle their own problems.
3. A culture has the right to intervene if another culture's practices are causing harm to their own culture. A culture does not have the right to cause harm to other's outside their culture for not following their ways, and this is the only time one has the right to intervene to stop wars or exploitation. An exception to this is if a culture violated the rights of an ally. But, intervention should be a last resort. It should only be used when it is clear that their is no other way of preventing further harm.
1. Why do some cultures feel superior to others?
ReplyDelete- I disagree with this question because one culture feel superior to their own culture, not the others. Culture is basically a background of people's childhood which means they grew up with that culture. Their cultural root doesn't change therefore, there is low possibility to feel superior to the other cultures.
2. When does one culture have a right to intervene in another's affairs?
- One culture have a right to intervene in another's affairs when they experienced in another's. People are blind about the other cultures unless they experienced in. After one got into the other culture they can actually discuss about the pros and cons about the culture that a person experienced because each culture has a dark side which there are some hidden fact that doesn't shown to the outsiders. Therefore, one has right to intervene after one experienced the others.
3. When does one culture not have a right to intervene?
- All different cultures have different priorities. One culture does not have a right to intervene because they all have a different priority of life style and desire. One culture does not understand the other culture because they never experienced before. Therefore, the cultures do not have a right to intervene each others.
1.) Cultures feel superior to others because all of them have different beliefs and traditions that seem to be more agreeable than others or might be more popular. People have different opinions and stick with them for almost the rest of their lives. But others shouldn't really be a stereotype against other religions, everyone has the right to believe in what ever their religion/culture associates with. Most behavior around this topic usually happens when one person wants to convert to another culture but that other culture won't accept them.
ReplyDelete2.) A culture should only intervene in another's affairs when there seems to be a threat against both of those cultures. Even if those cultures are not co-friendly,it would help them figure out what they might be up against. Plus, no culture would not want to lose it's followers.
1) Some cultures feel superior to others because they think that they are doing well and want to "help" other groups. Another reason some cultures feel superior because they just want to conquer some more people or land, so they justify their take-over by thinking that they are superior to the others.
ReplyDelete2) One culture never has the right to intervene, unless of course those two groups are at war or something.
3) Just because a culture is doing something people from another culture find immoral or unjust, that does not give the "morally superior" group the right to intervene in the practices of another group.
1. Why do some cultures feel superior to others?
ReplyDelete2. When does one culture have a right to intervene in another's affairs?
3. When does one culture not have a right to intervene?
Some cultures can feel superior to others in many ways. One way for example is the population of each culture. If on culture is a minority, then the other culture might feel superior. Another way a culture can feel superior to another is if that culture has a better financial presence than the other culture.
One culture has the right to intervene with another culture when people are being harmed. While cultures have their own believes, if those beliefs are not humane then anyone should have the right to intervene.
One culture does not have the right to intervene with another in any other case that wasn't stated above. Even if one culture does not believe in what another culture is doing, they do not have the right to intervene, unless of course the believes are harming others.
1. Why do some cultures feel superior to others?
ReplyDeleteThe reason some cultures feel superior to others is because naturally everyone is a little self bias, and on top of that, people usually take pride in the things they take part in. Due to this, everyone may feel that they are better than others. They think the culture they take part in is the best and therefore think they are the best. If they choose an option, in there mind, that is the best option and is therefor better than the other options. The way this is shown is by each member of a culture having this selfish attitude that ends up shaping that culture, and often times leading the idea that some cultures feel like they are superior.
2. When does one culture have a right to intervene in another's affairs?
If a certain culture is practing something that is too extreme to be social correct, then another culture can come intervene. For example, the African culture that believed twins were a curse and they needed to kill them, was a little extreme and something should have been done. Although a culture as all the cultural freedom they want, that doesn't mean they can break the law or take part in violent acts as such.
3. When does one culture not have a right to intervene?
As long as the culture is doing no extreme harm, I think they can have all the freedom they want without others trying to step in. If simply someone doesn't like the way a culture does something, they have no right to go and intervene and interfere with that cultures belief.
1) Different cultures have different beliefs. These beliefs generally are that they are better than other people. They believe in different things and they don't like to follow what other people do because they would think that they are in-superior compared to them. Different cultures are all very different from one another.
ReplyDelete2) Other cultures should not intervene with each other. They can judge one another but they should be getting into other peoples business.
3)I would say that other cultures should intervene when there is some sort of a life or death situation going on. Like either if someone is going to die or if they are going to start some sort of a war that may affect all nearby cultures
1.Due to one cultures morals and values if another culture has a practice you would consider wrong or inhumane then you want it to change. This is because your mind feels empathy to those affected. But your empathy is changed by your morals and values. They could feel that something you do is inhumane and unjust but you would be mad if they tried to change your set of beliefs.
ReplyDelete2. A culture has the right to intervene when it affects their country. The burqa for example is a controversial topic because France and many other European countries have banned it. This is fine because it is in their country and their culture dictates it as enslavement so they are fine.
3.But when some one goes to some one else country and call it inhumane and tries to change it that is when it starts to be wrong.
1. Some cultures feel superior on like there beliefs for example in one culture they separate like the straight people from like the bisexual once. 2. In some cultures they kill people that like did something bad like kill another person but some kill people because they did something they where suppose to see or do and well that is when some people should intervene and help the person that is going to get killed.
ReplyDelete1. Some cultures feel superior to others because they feel like their religions
ReplyDelete2. A culture should intervene when they think its the moral decision to do it. If they are saving or helping a human beings life then that is alright. Also, cultures should intervene if a treaty or allies are at risk because its better off trying to be allies with other cultures than to be enemies
3. A culture has no right to intervene if they are doing it because they dont believe or feel like their culture is more important. For example, the priest that went to countries that they did not know and made the people believe in Christianity and didn't respect or care for the natives peoples religions and beliefs. What I mean is forcing people to give up their religion so you can get a good final product or try to make them convince that your beliefs are better is wrong.
Cultures do feel superior to others. In some cases it depends on the point of view of each group. But in others, it is clear who holds the power over the other. They feel this way because of the events that occurred in the past history. Also, one culture might just think that their beliefs and rituals are more smarter and better than the opposing culture.
ReplyDelete2. A culture should only interfere with another's affairs if the affair is causing to be a threat to themselves. If not, interfering could be harmful to both parties. Also,
3.
1.) Some cultures feel superior because of belief that a physical attribute that they have makes them better in some way. This can be due to the group who feels superior has not seen much diversity and has only been exposed to people like themselves.
ReplyDelete2.)One culture has the right to intervene in another persons culture when it is hurting or affecting cultures other than its own. They can also intervene when other citizens of another country.
1.Some cultures feel superior to others because of their different traditions and beliefs that they have. To a culture they feel like theirs is the best and may disagree with what other culture think. Also one culture may be more well known than another and be more popular, which can make them feel more superior to another.
ReplyDelete2. A culture has the right to intervene with another when it affects them. If one culture feels like they are threatened or being bothered by another, they can intervene with them, because they are being affected by it.
1.) Some countries feel superior than others because of the different beliefs, religions and traditions they have. One culture for example might not let the people have a religion because they want them to worship a king. The other culture however lets the people believe in anything they want to and so they look down upon them because of how they treat their people. So in a sense they feel superior than the other culture because the people have more respect for each other.
ReplyDelete2.) One culture does not have the right to intervene with another culture's affairs at all because all around the world there are barriers and borders to show that this place you can only do this, but not anywhere else.
1) Some cultures feel superior than others because they think they are better than others. They also believe that they either can do it better or that their way of doing things is better than other people. They want to be superior because then that way they have the most "Power" and "Control".
ReplyDelete2)One culture has the right to into another's affairs when they are killing people that don't deserve to die. The people who they are killing are in danger don't deserve to be touched just because they have a tradition doesn't mean that they have to follow it if its that brutal. No one deserves to die because of "tradition"
1. In simple terms, some cultures, mainly white cultures, feel superior to others because of British and other white countries’ imperialism. As they colonized their territories, they brought along with them their culture, and superimposed it upon the indigenous population. With that came the acceptance of white culture, and the suppression of other cultures that don’t conform to “normal standards”. Colonialism has left a lasting mark on what people consider to be normal.
ReplyDelete2. One culture should not intervene in another's affairs, unless the other culture’s values interfere with the quality of life of the people of the other culture. If their practices harm the general public, who are not a part of the culture, then others have the right to intervene. For example, the Taliban have their own culture, but since they harm others outside of their community, and even within, that is when others need to intervene and to stop them.
3. A culture does not have the right to intervene if affairs are harmless to the general public. People have the right to believe in whatever they want, and unless somebody of that culture who doesn’t understand the values and isn’t a part of the community gets harmed, other cultures have no right to intervene. Even if the values are contrasting to other cultures, but do not harm any one, they should be tolerated at the least.
1. Some cultures feel superior to other cultures because of their opinions on the other cultures. Each culture may have their unique practices and traditions and other cultures may not understand it. They amy think that the traditions of the other culture is outrageous, thus thinking that they are superior. Another reason may be the power that each culture has, or how large their sphere of influence is. One culture that has spread into a wide area, having wealth and power, may look down upon a culture that is small and weak.
ReplyDelete2. One culture always has a right to intervene with another culture if they are interested, although it is always not the case. Usually, a culture will go and intervene with another culture because they pose a threat to them, has resources that they need, or if some sort of conflict arises.
3. For the most part, a culture does has the right to intervene with another culture. It is not a good idea to violently intervene with a culture of more power. Although you might have more power than the other culture, It is not necessary to destroy other cultures only for the sake of it.
Some cultures feel superior to other because they believe they have more knowledge and better beliefs. Especially for children who are raised in that background and counting to carry that ‘holier than thou’ attitude towards other cultures.
ReplyDeleteOne culture has the right to intervene with another culture when they're violating human rights.
Some cultures feel superior to others because they have a different set of values and beliefs and instead of accepting that another culture might have another perspective and that their is no one right way, they might see the other cultures as being just wrong. If they think that another culture is wrong they might feel superior. They also might feel superior if they had superior technology and were more powerful.
ReplyDeleteOne culture has the right to intervene when their culture is being impacted by the other. Ethnocentrism is not good, but if a bordering countries policies somehow affect yours you have a right to intervene. Also if you can refrain from using subjective interpretations and can use reason to prove that the other culture is doing something harmful, it is okay to intervene. For example, if you can prove that another nation is doing some crime that is listed in the universal declaration of human rights, the document accepted by all countries regardless of cultural bias it is a valid reason to intervene.
A culture does not have the right to intervene when the other culture is doing no harm to their cultures people and it does not violate the human rights of the people in the other country. If the people in the other country are having their human rights violated but are not against their culture, another culture still has the right to intervene and educate. If no harm is being done to anyone, just a difference in beliefs, it is not okay to intervene.
